"Since 2021, the parties involved have been officially notified that they do not possess Billy Joel's life rights and will not be able to secure the music rights required for this project. Nevertheless, the people making this film are navigating around the obstacles Billy Joel's rep cited. According to producer Adam Ripp, the chronicle of Joel's early professional years will be "told from the perspective of Billy's manager at the time, Irwin Mazur, and features Billy's lifelong friend and former drummer Jon Small." Those responsible for making Billy & Me reportedly have the life story rights for both Small and Mazur.
