My older sister, Claire, and I were never very close. And when I brought my fianc\u00e9, Ryan, to meet my family, she was cold and sharp with him.<\/p>\n
It felt strange to me.<\/p>\n
During the wedding preparations, Claire kept her distance. Then, at my bachelorette party, she walked up to me and said:<\/p>\n
“”You should CANCEL the wedding.””<\/p>\n
I got angry and demanded to know why she would say something like that about him. She only replied that she couldn’t explain anything right now but begged me to cancel the wedding.<\/p>\n
Of course, I didn’t. I loved Ryan.<\/p>\n
On the wedding day, we had our ceremony at the church, and afterward, everyone got into their cars and drove to the restaurant.<\/p>\n
All the guests had already arrived at the restaurant, but Claire still hadn’t shown up.<\/p>\n
She wasn’t answering her phone.<\/p>\n
We waited for over an hour, and then a police officer called my mother and said there had been an ac:cident on the road. We all rushed to the scene immediately.<\/p>\n
Claire had taken a different route. Heavy rain had started, and she lost control of the car. It flipped over and ended up in the water.<\/p>\n
The police said they hadn’t found her b0dy because the current had most likely carried her away. She wouldn’t have survived a crash like that.<\/p>\n
My parents were crying. I just stood there frozen, unable to speak.<\/p>\n
Back at home, Ryan tried to comfort me, but I felt completely broken.<\/p>\n
A week later, I got a call from Megan \u2014 Claire’s best friend and coworker. Ryan was at work at the time.<\/p>\n
She sounded nervous as she said:<\/p>\n
“”Come to the office immediately. Claire left a phone and a note for you on my desk!””<\/p>\n
I immediately drove to the office.<\/p>\n
I unfolded Claire’s note, and as I started reading, I forgot how to breathe:<\/p>\n
“”Alice, if you’re reading this, then it’s time for the truth to come out. Don’t trust Ryan. Turn on the last VIDEO in the gallery on that phone.””<\/p>\n
MY BL:OOD RAN COLD AS I GRABBED THE PHONE AND PRESSED PLAY<\/p>\n
What jobs had he actually worked?<\/p>\n
Later, I cornered her beside the sink.<\/p>\n
\u201cCan you please stop?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m asking questions.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cYou\u2019re interrogating him.\u201d<\/p>\n
She glanced toward the dining room where Ryan was laughing with Dad.<\/p>\n
\u201cMaybe you should ask yourself why he makes me want to.\u201d<\/p>\n
The comment stayed with me longer than I admitted.<\/p>\n
When I mentioned it later in the car, Ryan only shrugged.<\/p>\n
\u201cMaybe your sister just doesn\u2019t like me.\u201d<\/p>\n
He said it so calmly, so reasonably, that I felt foolish for even bringing it up.<\/p>\n
Maybe that was the first crack.<\/p>\n
I just didn\u2019t recognize it yet.<\/p>\n
